Start with the application
Write down the environment, loads, weight constraints and mating materials. These explain why a grade is needed and give the reviewer a basis for suggesting an alternative.
Add grade and condition
An alloy name alone leaves room for different conditions. Include the temper or heat-treatment condition where relevant, and attach the specification you need to meet.
Keep substitutions explicit
If an alternative is acceptable, ask for its exact designation and supporting information. Review the difference before it becomes the approved material.
Carry the choice into the drawing
Keep the drawing, quotation and purchase order aligned. A material change after sample approval may require another review of machining, finish and performance.
